Flagstaff, Arizona, located along historic Route 66, rests at 7,000 feet nestled at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, Arizona's highest point at 12,633 feet. Flagstaff is northern Arizona's largest city as well as its regional trade center. The city is also home to the county seat for Coconino County, the second largest county in the nation, with twelve million acres. ECONOMICS - The Flagstaff area has numerous assets that allow it to compete favorably with other cities of similar size. A highly rated quality of life, excellent educational opportunities enhanced by NAU and CCC, and a motivated, educated, and qualified work force enable Flagstaff to meet the economic challenges of today and the future. Flagstaff's traditional economic base of government, eduction, transportation and tourism is diversifying and broadening, thanks in part to several science and high technology research and development companies that have chosen to locate in our community. LABOR FORCE - In 1997 Flagstaff's labor force totaled 29,921 people. The most recent age demographics available are from the 1990 census and indicate that 53.1 percent of the work force is between twenty-five and forty-five, which promotes labor stability. Within the Flagstaff city limits 27,939 persons are employed. Source: ADOC Flagstaff Profile, 1998. RECREATION - Flagstaff is within 70 miles of six National Parks and Monuments including the Grand Canyon, Montezuma Castle, Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater. Phoenix is located only two hours south of Flagstaff and Las Vegas is a four-hour drive to the northwest. Just miles outside of Flagstaff are two Nordic skiing centers and the Arizona Snowbowl. Twenty miles south, and 2,000 vertical feet below Flagstaff are Oak Creek Canyon and the Town of Sedona, a red rock masterpiece. An entourage of smaller natural lakes and reservoirs are located east of Flagstaff. The City's Parks and Recreation division offers a popular variety of organized competitive adult/youth leagues such as softball, baseball, volleyball, basketball, soccer and ice hockey. Within the city limits are three swimming pools, four fitness and recreation centers, an indoor ice/in-line skating rink, a pressurized tennis dome, and a professional indoor stadium. CLIMATE -
SCHOOLS - We have some of the best schools in the country. The Flagstaff Unified School District - Primary and Secondary, had 11,884 students enrolled for the 1997-1998 academic year. Schools in the district consist of eleven k-6 elementary schools and one k-8 school in Leupp that is both a k-5 elementary school and a 6-8 middle school. The district also has three other middle schools, including a Renaissance Magnet middle school, and three high schools. Numerous charter schools and secular schools provide additional k-12 educational opportunities. Coconino Community College - is the fastest growing community college in the state. CCC has campuses in Flagstaff, Page, and a new one in the works in Flagstaff, and offers classes at Grand Canyon Village and the City of Williams. CCC's Continuing Education Program offers credit-free courses and workshops in response to community and business needs in areas like computer software programs, the Internet, and Spanish for professionals. CCC provides tailored courses and workshops developed to meet employers objectives in furthering the education of their employees. These courses are offered at the college or at the employers place of business. CCC also is proud of its Small Business Development Center that offers technical assistance in all aspects of small business ownership. SBDC services are provided to small business owners countywide including Sedona. Northern Arizona University - enjoys a solid reputation as one of the premier campuses in the West whose primary focus is undergraduate education. NAU's commitment to undergraduate education is exemplified by a strong focus on teaching and close interaction between students and faculty. Hallmarks of NAU's teaching tradition are relatively small classes, personal attention, and individualized learning.
